Gods Unchained Is Now A Play to Earn Game – Can You Make a Living?

Gods Unchained has released a new feature that makes the game play to earn. The feature is called “fusing.” It allows players to turn the centralized core game cards they earn through the game into blockchain-backed Ethereum tokens.

This article will explain how fusing works and how players can use it to earn ETH.

Genesis Set Cards Vs. Core Set cards

There are two different types of cards in Gods Unchained.

Genesis Set

Genesis Set cards were created before the game was publicly released. These were available in packs and sold on the developer’s website. The sale of these cards was used to fund the development of the game.

Genesis Set cards are and have always been backed by ERC-721 tokens. They are therefore truly owned by the player and are freely tradeable. Genesis Set cards cannot be earned through playing the game.

In the future, the developer of Gods Unchained plans to release new sets of cards to finance further development of the game. These cards will also be Ethereum-backed, and players will not be able to earn them through the game.

Core Set cards before fusing

Core Set cards are earned through two methods. First, players get a small number of core set packs when they first create an account with the game. Second, players earn packs when they gain experience levels by playing ranked constructed PvP matches.

Players gain experience whether they win or lose matches. Winning grants more experience than losing. But there is no limit to how many matches a player can play.

Essentially, core set cards are a participation reward for ranked matches.

Before fusing was implemented, core set cards were always held on the developer’s server and were not tradeable. Fusing allows this circumstance to change.

How fusing works

Using the new fusing mechanic, players can now combine two units of the same core set card with a resource called flux. This will produce a meteoric version of the card. Meteoric versions of core set cards are ERC-721 tokens.

Two identical cards required

In order to convert a centralized, “plain” card into a meteoric one, the player must provide two copies of the card that is to be fused.

For example, if a player wants to convert his plain Felid Protector card into a meteoric one, he will need two copies of Felid Protector. The player can’t use two different cards to perform one fusing.

Flux

Each fusing also consumes a resource called flux. Flux is a centralized asset that cannot be traded.

The amount of flux required for fusing depends on the rarity of the cards used. Here is a breakdown of the flux cost for each rarity.

Common: 20 flux

Rare: 40 flux

Epic: 120 flux

Legendary: 200 flux

How to get flux

To earn flux, players must win ranked constructed matches. Each day, a player can earn flux by winning up to three matches using the god of his choice. Once these three match wins are used up, the player can continue earning flux by playing with a different god.

Each match win produces greater flux than the previous win. So the flux-revenue curve is exponential rather than linear.

Once the player has achieved three victories with each of the six gods, no more flux can be earned for that day.

This system resets 24 hours after the player begins his first match.

Flux and rank

There is a base amount of flux that can be earned by any player, regardless of rank. But players who have high rank earn even more flux per match than players with lower rank.

Maximizing flux gains

In our testing, we used a new account that was the very lowest rank. We were able to earn 16.4 flux in 2 to 3 hours. This was almost enough to fuse a plain common card into a meteoric one.

We got six match wins during this time, maxing out the gains from the gods of Death and Deception. There were still 4 more gods available to be used, but we ran out of time.

From this test, it’s clear that players who have the ability to play 6 or 8 hours a day will be able to earn significantly more flux. But more casual players will still be able to earn enough to fuse 1 common card every 2 or 3 days.

This test also showed that having a high rank is not necessary in order to make progress collecting meteoric core set cards.

Linking a wallet

To receive meteoric cards, you must have a wallet linked to your account through the Gods Unchained website. Attempting to fuse without a wallet linked will produce an error message.

In testing, we found that the client sometimes produced this error even if a wallet was linked. If this happens, try clicking the gear settings icon in the upper-right of the client screen and selecting clear cache. We found that this fixed the problem.

How to earn ETH playing Gods Unchained

Earning ETH using Gods Unchained is simple: Play matches. Beat your opponents. Earn flux.

Convert the cards you win into meteoric versions. Sell in the Gods Unchained marketplace for ETH. Rinse and repeat.

We wouldn’t recommend trying to make a living out of this. It probably pays far below minimum wage. And you’ll likely make more ETH in the long run by keeping some of the cards initially so that you can build better decks.

Still, Hearthstone and MTG: Arena don’t pay you for playing. So if you’re still on the fence about making the switch to blockchain CCGs, this feature provides even more of a reason to take the plunge.
